How the shipping calculator prices a parcel

Parcel shipping from Houston is priced on two things you control — where the box goes and how big and heavy it is — plus a small surcharge on a minority of addresses. Here is exactly how the calculator turns your inputs into a label price.

  1. Zone from the destination ZIP. Every ZIP code maps to a shipping zone from 1 to 8 by distance from Houston 77087. The Houston metro is Zone 1; Dallas and San Antonio are Zone 3; Atlanta, Chicago and Miami are Zone 5; Los Angeles is Zone 6; New York is Zone 7; Seattle, Honolulu and Puerto Rico are Zone 8.
  2. Billable weight. The label is priced on the higher of the actual weight and the dimensional weight (length × width × height in inches ÷ 166). Under 1 lb is priced by the ounce; from 1 lb the weight rounds up to the next whole pound.
  3. One cell on the rate card. The zone and the billable weight pick a single price from the rate card below. That is the label price — there is no fuel surcharge on top.
  4. Extras only where they apply. A delivery-area surcharge on some ZIPs ($0.55 or $1.10; $2.75 for remote Hawaii and Puerto Rico addresses), an overweight fee of $16.50 for 2030 lb parcels and an oversize fee of $16.50 for a box with a side over 23.6 in. Nothing else.
  5. Off-network and heavy parcels go USPS. Any ZIP that is not on our regional parcel network, and any parcel over 30 lb or over the network’s size limits, is priced automatically at USPS Ground Advantage commercial rates (up to 70 lb and 130 in length + girth) through our shipping platform — the average USPS rate for that zone and weight, with tracking and $100 of USPS insurance included.
Packaging decides the bill more often than distance does. A 5 lb item in a 14 × 12 × 8 in box is billed at 9 lb because the box’s dimensional weight is 8.1 lb — the same item in a 12 × 10 × 8 in box bills at 6 lb. Enter your dimensions and let the calculator show you the difference before you order cartons.

These are the label prices the calculator uses — one price per weight band and zone, in US dollars, tracking included and no fuel surcharge. Under 1 lb is priced by the ounce; 1 lb and up by the pound, to 20 lb. Parcels between 20 and 30 lb use the 20 lb rate plus the $16.50 overweight fee. Add the delivery-area surcharge only where the calculator shows one for the ZIP.

  • Parcels over 30 lb billable weight (USPS takes them to 70 lb), a longest side over 35.4 in, or length + width + height over 59.1 in (USPS allows 130 in of length + girth) — the calculator switches automatically. Beyond the USPS limits it is freight, quoted in writing.

  • PO Box and APO/FPO/DPO addresses — always routed to USPS at fulfillment, whatever the ZIP.

What you can ship, and how to pack it

Most ecommerce goods ship without a second thought: apparel, accessories, supplements in sealed retail packaging, beauty products without alcohol-based sprays, books, toys, electronics with installed batteries, home goods and pet supplies. Pack to survive a parcel network — a rigid box or padded mailer with the item unable to shift — because damage traced to packaging is not claimable.

Prohibited: alcohol, tobacco and vape products, medicines and medical devices, perishable or temperature-controlled food, live animals and plants, cash and high-value goods (jewelry, precious metals, artwork), firearms parts and replicas, and regulated hazardous materials including standalone lithium batteries.

Restricted (pre-approval and compliant packaging required): perfume and other alcohol-based cosmetics, aerosols, nail polish, household chemicals, shelf-stable packaged food, magnets and knives. Tell us what you sell before your first inbound and we confirm the right service for each SKU.

Shipping calculator FAQ

How does the shipping calculator work out my rate?
Three inputs decide the price: the zone of your destination ZIP (1 to 8, by distance from Houston 77087), the billable weight of the parcel (the higher of actual weight and dimensional weight), and any delivery-area surcharge attached to that ZIP. The calculator reads the same rate card printed on this page, so the number you see is the number you would be billed for that label, before any final weight correction at label purchase.
Is the origin always Houston, TX 77087?
Yes. Every parcel priced here ships from the KAK Sourcing & Fulfillment warehouse at 6117 Long Dr, Houston, TX 77087, so the calculator locks the origin and only asks for the customer’s destination ZIP. Orders received by 2pm CT, Monday to Saturday, leave the same day.
What if my customer’s ZIP code is not covered?
Every US ZIP gets a price. Our regional parcel network covers 10,150+ ZIP codes across 45 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, concentrated in metro and suburban areas; Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and rural ZIPs elsewhere are not on it. For those the calculator switches automatically to USPS Ground Advantage at commercial pricing — the rate our shipping platform (ShipStation) applies to every USPS label we print — using the USPS zone chart from 77087. It is the average USPS rate for that zone and weight; the exact figure is set when the label prints.
What are the maximum weight and size?
On our regional parcel network: up to 30 lb billable weight, longest side no more than 35.4 inches, length + width + height no more than 59 inches. Parcels between 20 and 30 lb pay the 20 lb rate plus a $16.50 overweight fee; a box with a side over 23.6 inches pays a $16.50 oversize fee. Anything heavier or larger is priced automatically on USPS Ground Advantage, which takes parcels to 70 lb and 130 inches of length plus girth. Beyond that it is freight, quoted individually.
Does dimensional weight apply?
Yes. Dimensional weight is length × width × height in inches divided by 166, and the label is priced on whichever is higher, actual or dimensional weight. A 12 × 10 × 8 inch box has a dimensional weight of 5.783 lb, so a 5 lb item in that box is billed at 6 lb. Add your box dimensions in the calculator to see the effect before you choose packaging.
How long does delivery take?
Zones 1–2 typically deliver in 2–3 days, Zones 3–4 in 4–5 days, Zones 5–6 in 5–6 days and Zones 7–8 in 6–7 days, counted from carrier pickup. These are carrier transit estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates; every label is tracked door to door.
Can I ship to PO Boxes or military addresses?
Yes, through USPS. Our regional parcel network does not deliver to PO Box or APO/FPO/DPO addresses, so those orders are routed to USPS Ground Advantage at fulfillment automatically, whatever the ZIP, at the USPS rates shown on this page. If the ZIP you enter is on our network, the calculator shows the network rate; a PO Box at that ZIP will ship USPS at the USPS rate for the same zone and weight.
What can’t ship on this service?
Alcohol, tobacco and vape products, medicines and medical devices, perishable or temperature-controlled food, live animals and plants, cash and high-value goods such as jewelry, and regulated hazardous materials including standalone lithium batteries are prohibited. Restricted goods such as perfume, aerosols, nail polish, household chemicals and shelf-stable packaged food can ship only with prior approval and compliant packaging, so tell us what you sell before your first inbound.
Is the calculator price the final price I pay?
It is the current published rate for the weight, dimensions and ZIP you entered, valid as of September 2026 and inclusive of tracking, with no fuel surcharge on network labels. USPS figures follow USPS Ground Advantage commercial pricing effective July 2026 and are refreshed when USPS publishes new prices. The final charge is set when the label is purchased, from the scanned weight and dimensions and the verified address, so a box that turns out heavier or larger than entered will be billed at its true band. Rate changes are announced to clients before they take effect.
What happens if a parcel is lost or damaged?
Every label is tracked. If tracking stops for more than 10 days the parcel is treated as lost, and confirmed loss or transit damage is compensated for the shipping cost plus the declared value, up to $100 per shipment, with claims filed within 30 days of shipment. For higher-value items we recommend our national carrier accounts with declared-value insurance — ask when you request a quote.
