Amazon FBA Prep Services: What They Actually Cost and Include

What "FBA prep" actually means

FBA prep is the packaging and labeling work Amazon requires before a unit is allowed into its fulfillment network. It's not optional and it's not negotiable — Amazon's automated inbound checks reject or charge for units that arrive without it. At minimum that usually means an FNSKU barcode on every unit (so Amazon's system can tell your inventory apart from every other seller's), a poly bag with a suffocation warning on anything that needs one, bubble wrap on fragile or glass items, and cartonization that matches Amazon's case-pack rules for that SKU.

Get any one of those wrong — a missing FNSKU, a poly bag without the warning label, a carton that doesn't match the declared case pack — and Amazon can reject the shipment, charge an unplanned prep fee at its own (higher) rate, or in repeat cases flag the account for a performance notice. That's the real cost of skipping prep, not just the sticker price of doing it.

Why sellers outsource it instead of prepping in-house

Doing this yourself works fine at small volume — a few dozen units a week, one person with a label printer and a roll of poly bags. It stops working once you're receiving pallets instead of boxes, selling more than one or two SKUs, or trying to run a warehouse process out of a garage. At that point the labor cost of doing it right (and the error cost of doing it wrong) usually exceeds what a prep center charges per unit.

What $0.75 per unit includes — and what's billed separately

Full-service FBA handling for units under 5 lb is $0.75/unit, including FNSKU labeling and prep labor. Materials are separate: polybag $0.20/unit and bubble wrap $0.20/unit when needed. Receiving, storage and outbound freight are separate. Lean label-ready units start at $0.50; heavier units use the published weight bands.

Kitting, bundling, subscription-box assembly, custom inserts, and non-standard packaging (oversized cartons, specialty void fill, branded thank-you cards) are custom-quoted — tell us the specs and you'll have a number in 24 hours. We won't guess at a price for something we haven't seen.

How FBA prep works, step by step

1. Your inventory arrives at our Houston dock (6117 Long Dr) — by pallet, LTL freight, or parcel.
2. We check-count against your packing list or invoice and log it into our WMS the same day.
3. Each unit gets its FNSKU label applied, matched to the ASIN you've assigned in Seller Central.
4. Poly bagging and bubble wrap are applied as the SKU requires — suffocation warning included where Amazon's rules call for one.
5. Units are cartonized to Amazon's case-pack specification for that listing.
6. The prepped shipment ships to the Amazon fulfillment center Amazon's system assigns, same day if it's in before the 2pm CT cutoff.

Should you prep FBA inventory yourself, or outsource it?

The honest answer depends on volume, not on how well-run your operation is.

DIY prep still makes sense when:

• You're moving under a few hundred units a month and can absorb the labor personally.
• You have storage space that's actually climate-controlled — heat and humidity damage inventory and labels alike.
• You're still validating a product and don't want to commit to a vendor relationship yet.

A prep center starts paying for itself when:

• You're spending more hours on labeling and boxing than on the parts of the business only you can do.
• You're shipping multiple SKUs with different prep rules and tracking that manually is starting to cause errors.
• An Amazon inbound rejection or performance notice has already cost you more than a few months of prep fees would have.
• You want inventory available for same-day turnaround instead of batching it around your own schedule.

What to ask any FBA prep center before you sign

These are the questions we get from every serious seller before they commit a shipment — answered straight, with the actual numbers.

Many 3PLs charge setup fees, require a minimum monthly spend, or lock you into a term contract — worth asking about directly, because those costs rarely show up on the rate card.

What a month of FBA prep actually costs

Prep is priced per unit, so the math is straightforward — the only variable most sellers miss is storage, since pallets sitting on the shelf between receiving and prep still bill monthly. Here's the arithmetic at three volumes, assuming standard pallet density and a full month of storage:

If you sell on more than just Amazon
