What "private label prep" actually covers

Private label prep is the work that turns a pallet of your branded product into individual units Amazon will accept at a fulfillment center. That means an FNSKU barcode on every unit, a poly bag or bubble wrap where your category requires it, and cartons packed inside Amazon's weight and dimension rules. Skip any one of those and Amazon either rejects the shipment at receiving or bills you a prep fee after the fact — usually more per unit than paying a 3PL to do it correctly the first time.

It's a different job than prepping wholesale or retail-arbitrage inventory. Your product has no existing FNSKU history, your packaging is custom (which changes how suffocation-warning placement and bag-thickness rules apply), and if this is your first shipment, your account's inventory performance is being watched from day one. Get prep wrong on shipment one and you're fixing a labeling error and a listing hold at the same time, not just a late order.

Full-service FBA handling for units under 5 lb is $0.75/unit, including FNSKU labeling and prep labor. Materials are separate: polybag $0.20/unit and bubble wrap $0.20/unit when needed. Receiving, storage and outbound freight are separate. Lean label-ready units start at $0.50; heavier units use the published weight bands.

The step-by-step process, in the order it happens

This is what happens to your inventory between the truck backing up to our dock and the pallet leaving for an Amazon fulfillment center.

1. Receiving and inspection. We count cartons against your packing slip, open a sample carton to check unit count and condition, and flag manufacturing defects or shipping damage before it becomes your chargeback. Receiving is $20 per pallet ($5 per carton).
2. FNSKU labeling. We print and apply your Amazon barcode to every unit, positioned so it scans cleanly and doesn't sit next to a visible manufacturer barcode — Amazon rejects units where a scanner could grab the wrong one.
3. Polybagging or bubble wrap, by category. Apparel, plush, and anything that collects dust or moisture gets polybagged, with a suffocation warning printed per Amazon's bag-size and warning rules. Fragile items — glass, ceramics, electronics — get bubble wrapped to survive Amazon's sortation belts, not just the truck ride over.
4. Bundling and multi-packs. If you sell a bundle or brand pack, we assemble the set and apply a single "Sold as Set" label so it isn't broken apart at an Amazon FC. Custom kitting, subscription-box assembly, and branded inserts are available — those are custom-quoted since every kit is different.
5. Cartonization. Units go into shipping cartons within Amazon's weight and dimension limits, sealed and carton-labeled against your Amazon shipping plan.
6. Palletizing and dispatch. Cartons are palletized, shrink-wrapped, and manifested against your shipment ID. Inventory on our dock before the 2pm CT cutoff, Monday–Saturday, ships the same day.

What's in the $0.75 rate, and what's quoted separately

The per-unit rate is published and locked — no surprise line items on the invoice. A few services that vary by product get a custom quote instead, because pricing them as flat rates would mean overcharging simple jobs or underquoting complex ones.

What a first shipment actually costs

Say you're launching a skincare line with 500 units arriving on two pallets, and this is your first shipment into FBA.

• FBA prep: 500 units × $0.75 = $375.00
• Receiving: 2 pallets × $20.00 = $40.00
• Storage, one month, 2 pallets: 2 × $25.00 = $50.00

Prep and receiving alone run $415.00 — no setup fee, no penalty for launching small. Add one month of storage for those 2 pallets and the total comes to $465.00, prorated if units ship out to Amazon before the month is up. See our storage rates for how monthly billing works. Reordering monthly at 300 units runs $225 in prep, plus receiving and any storage carried over. The math doesn't change as you scale — there's no volume penalty for staying small between reorders.

What sellers ask before their first shipment

These are the questions that come up on almost every private label intake call, answered straight.

Is there a minimum order to start? No. We work with a single unit through container volume — the per-unit rate doesn't change.

Are there setup, onboarding, or account-management fees? There are no setup fees. We haven't published a blanket rate for account-management or software/integration fees — if your setup needs custom integration work, send the details and we'll quote it as part of onboarding.

Is there a contract? No — it's month-to-month.

How fast is inventory available after receiving? Same day, if it's on our dock before the 2pm CT cutoff, Monday through Saturday.

Do you track lot numbers and expiration dates? Yes, available through our real-time WMS dashboard — relevant for skincare, supplements, and anything with a shelf life.

What if something goes wrong? We carry insurance coverage up to $500,000 per occurrence and are liable for our own handling errors. If a unit is damaged on our end, that's on us, not a chargeback you eat.

Once units are prepped and moving through FBA, ongoing DTC or wholesale orders on the same SKUs run through our 3PL warehouse service at $2.00 per order under 5 lb — useful if you're selling the same products on Shopify or TikTok Shop alongside Amazon.

Mistakes that get private label shipments rejected or charged back

Most of the private label problems we see on intake aren't Amazon being difficult — they're prep issues that were preventable.

• Manufacturer barcode left visible next to the FNSKU. A scanner grabs whichever one it hits first. If it's the wrong one, the unit gets commingled with someone else's inventory or rejected outright.
• Wrong poly bag thickness or a missing suffocation warning. Amazon has specific bag-gauge and warning-label rules by opening size — get it wrong and the whole carton can bounce at receiving.
• No plan for lot or expiration tracking on consumables. Skincare, supplements, and food brands that skip this find out the hard way when Amazon or a customer asks for it later.
• Underestimating storage timing. Sellers budget for prep but forget storage bills monthly from the day inventory lands — plan the prep-to-ship window so units aren't sitting longer than they need to.
• Assuming bundles ship themselves. A multi-pack without a "Sold as Set" label gets broken apart at an Amazon FC and sold as individual units — not what you intended.

None of this is complicated once someone's done it a few hundred times. It's just easy to miss on shipment one.
