What Kitting and Assembly Actually Mean

Kitting means combining two or more SKUs into a single unit before it ships — a 3-pack of your best-seller, a starter bundle, a subscription box with five components inside. Assembly is the labor behind it: opening cases, sorting components, building the finished unit, and checking it before it goes into a mailer.

Both are different from simple bundling in how we price them. A bundle can be picked and packed per order at our standard rate — three items go into one box at checkout, no pre-built kit required. True kitting means we build the combined unit ahead of time so it's sitting on the shelf ready to ship the moment an order comes in. Why Shipping Loose Components Costs You More

Every item you ship separately gets its own touch — its own pick, its own packaging material, and its own share of the box's dimensional weight. Combine those items into one kit and you're paying for one pick and one box instead of three or four.

Many 3PLs price by touch: a base pick fee plus an additional line-item charge for every extra SKU in the same order. Ship a 4-item starter set that way and you can be paying for four separate picks before the box even leaves the building — on top of four sets of void fill and tape instead of one.

Dimensional weight is the other cost driver. Carriers bill by whichever is greater — actual weight or the box's volume divided by a DIM factor. A kit built to fit a tight, purpose-sized box beats four loose items rattling around in an oversized one, on both dim weight and damage risk.

Pick, pack, and ship for an order — kitted or not — runs $2.00 to $4.00 (custom-quoted over 15 lb) depending on weight. Amazon FBA prep is a flat $0.75 per unit. The labor to physically build a kit ahead of time is custom-quoted, because build time varies too much by product to publish one number.

Preassembly vs. Pick-on-Demand: Which One Do You Need

If your kit composition changes often, pick-on-demand costs you nothing extra — it's built into the per-order rate. If you're shipping the same exact kit thousands of times, preassembly is worth paying for.

Pick-on-demand makes sense for seasonal bundles, mix-and-match sets, or anything you're still testing. We pick each component fresh at order time, at the standard $2.00–$4.00 (custom over 15 lb) rate, with no separate line-item charge for the extra SKUs in the box.

Preassembly makes sense for subscription boxes, retail multi-packs, or any kit you ship at real volume without changing it. Building it ahead of time means the pick floor grabs one finished unit instead of assembling from scratch on every order — faster turnaround, with the kit already sitting on the shelf ready to ship the moment an order comes in.

How a kitting project starts

1. Send your component list and target kit composition — what goes in, how many of each.
2. We quote the build labor per unit within 24 hours, based on component count and assembly complexity.
3. Ship your components to our Houston warehouse, or we receive them directly from your supplier.
4. We build and QC the first batch and confirm it matches spec.
5. Finished kits sit ready to ship — orders go out same-day before the 2pm CT cutoff, Monday through Saturday.

What's Included in Kitting, and What Costs Extra

Packaging materials, poly bags, bubble wrap, and standard cartonization are included in the FBA prep and per-order fulfillment rates. Branded inserts and the physical labor of building a kit are custom-quoted, because they vary by product.

None of that has a published flat rate — the honest answer is we quote it after seeing your components, because a five-second fold and a fifteen-piece kit with custom inserts take very different amounts of labor.
